Cold Brew is the better energy drink. Especially our cold brews. We tested the Brasil for caffeine content and got an outstanding result. 1,222 mg of caffeine per liter. Broken down to a 200 ml bottle, that's 244 mg per cold brew bottle. Just to compare with Red Bull : 250 ml contains just 80 mg of caffeine. So now we have it in black and white that cold brew is the better energy drink. Especially since it tastes better and is much more natural, since it only contains water and coffee.
Caffeine content in cold brew – How is cold brew made?
Most people in the world know how to make iced coffee. Coffee that is brewed hot and then allowed to cool and served over ice. But that has little to do with cold brew. This cold version of coffee is not only served cold, but also made cold. And that results in a completely different taste experience. There are two methods for making it: full immersion and Kyoto cold drip.
Caffeine content Cold Brew – Full Immersion
As the name suggests - full immersion means full immersion - with this method you mix the coffee powder directly into the water. Then you let the mixture extract for 18 to 24 hours at room temperature - or better in the refrigerator. Once that's done, you filter out the coffee grounds again and you have your cold brew. In our factory it works in principle the same way, only in large machines that are designed exactly for this purpose.
Caffeine Content Cold Brew – Kyoto Cold Drip
With the Kyoto Cold Drip, however, the cold brew is made in a similar way to a pour over. Water drips through the coffee grounds. The differences are the water temperature and the duration: cold water is used and the brewing takes between two and six hours. Basically, both methods offer a lot of opportunities for experimentation by changing the grind, coffee origin and extraction time. This will also change the taste and caffeine content of the cold brew.
Caffeine content Cold Brew – popularity is increasing
Especially in the USA – but also increasingly in Europe – cold brew has become a popular drink in coffee shops. Many shops have their own
Recipe and always make the cold brew fresh. Nevertheless, cold brew is also very popular as an RTD drink. (RTD = ready to drink). So if you want a good kick of caffeine on the go, you can simply get a cold brew from 25GRAMS and have the perfect drink for sports, hiking and leisure. Since cold brew is basic but also easy to make, it is now also popular to extract at home. The good thing about the bottles from 25GRAMS is above all the long shelf life thanks to pasteurization and that you don't have to do any work.
Caffeine content Cold Brew – Factors for caffeine quantity
The caffeine content in your cold brew can vary greatly from brand to brand, from home brew to coffee shop. Let's start at the beginning: caffeine is produced by the coffee plant as a defense against pests. This means that the more pests the plant has to fend off, the higher the basic content in the plant. The different types of coffee have different caffeine contents. Robusta has almost twice as much caffeine as Arabica. During roasting, little or no caffeine is broken down, which means that the degree of roasting has no effect on the caffeine content of your coffee. However, roasting changes the cell structure of the bean. The darker (and therefore more porous) a coffee is roasted, the easier it is to extract caffeine from it. Other points that greatly influence the caffeine content in your coffee are: coffee-water ratio, grind size, extraction time.
Caffeine content Cold Brew – the mix makes it
Ultimately, however, the mixing ratio determines the caffeine content in your cup or glass. Cold brew is often made as a concentrate and then diluted before serving. There is also a maximum amount, or saturation level, of caffeine in a drink. With Cold Brew, this maximum amount is reached after about 3 hours of extraction time. Therefore, it is quite possible that different cafes offer cold brew drinks with different caffeine contents. So feel free to experiment and try different brands before you find your favorite cold brew.
Caffeine content Cold Brew – better than energy drinks?
Let's get to the part where we compare ourselves. Ever since Red Bull began its triumphant march around the world at the end of the 1990s, energy drinks (no matter which brand) have become a popular companion for anyone who needs a kick of caffeine now and then. Cold brew can do that too - even better. If you read through the ingredients of energy drinks, you will find many, including some strange ingredients. Most of all, many of them contain a fair amount of sugar. Cold brew is much healthier: water and coffee. There's nothing more in it. And in terms of caffeine content, the Brasil we tested is far higher than a conventional energy drink. Here is a small comparison with other drinks:
beverage | Caffeine content mg/litre | portion | Caffeine Content Serving (mg) |
25GRAMS Cold Brew Brazil | 1,222 | 20ml bottle | 244 |
RedBull | 320 | 250ml can | 80 |
Monster Energy | 300 | 500ml can | 150 |
ESN Crank Pre-Workout | 400 | 19g per 500 ml water | 200 |
